Overloaded by sales pitches

Overloaded by sales pitches, consumers are gravitating toward brands that they sense are true and genuine. Hunger for the authentic is all around us. You can see it in the way millions are drawn to mission-driven products like organic foods. It's there in Return to Tiffany™ Cuff links sex-without-guilt way people respond to the footloose joy of BMW's Mini. You see it in the tribes of "i-centered" buyers who value individuality and independence-and whom Apple has so cleverly cultivated through its iMacs and iPods.

Yet our sense of what's "real" in this post-postmodern world takes on all kinds of strangely distorted shapes and guises, as if it's reflected back at us from a Bow earrings of fun-house mirrors. A fictional coffee grower, it turns out, has lasting resonance. The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, with its hoaxy newscasts, comes across as authentic in large part because it self-consciously declares itself to be fake. A coffeehouse chain like Starbucks can rise to prominence by creating an imitation of Milan's espresso bars-and then be pilloried (by its own chairman, among others) for not staying true to that fabricated experience. What's authentic is not always real, and what's real is not always what it seems.

Playing the authenticity game in a sophisticated way has become a requirement for every marketer, because the opposite of real isn't fake-it's cynicism. When Paloma's Zellige earrings brand asserts authenticity in a clumsy way, it quickly breeds distrust or, at the very least, disinterest. Just remember Coca-Cola's attempt to muck with the Real Thing's original formula-and the calamitous launch of New Coke. Or consider the plight of Levi's, at one time the very epitome of an authentic American brand, which became increasingly out-of-date to new lovers of denim.

Both the promise and the peril of "getting real" are, indeed, very real. "Authentic" is derived from the Greek authentikos, which means "original." And unfortunately, there's no recipe for originality. Each brand must build its own primary source code for the authentic. Still, there are some larger lessons (and pitfalls) that anyone charged with overseeing a brand would be wise to consider. American Idiot is the latest

American Idiot is the latest musical to join them, and probably the loudest. Based on Green Day's 2004 album-length rock opera of the same name, the punk-pop tiffany tells the story of three disaffected young men -trying-with the help of sex, drugs, and battered -guitars-not to lose their minds in George W. Bush's America. Under the direction of Michael Mayer (who co-wrote the show's libretto with Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong), it has raucous energy and frequently spectacular stagecraft. It doesn't hold together as well as it should, but there's still something entirely welcome going on here.

Unlike too many of its predecessors, American Idiot isn't trafficking in -nostalgia-the material is too new (and too bleak) for that. Nor does orchestrator Tom Tiffany Money Clips trade the album's jagged edges for a -Broadway--friendly pseudopop mire. In other words, the show makes the case that there need not be a chasm between the music that people hear on Broadway and the music they hear, well, everywhere else. With the arrival of Green Day and its punk-pop opera, Broadway takes another step toward the cultural relevance it lost half a century ago-another step back from the wilderness.

To understand how a trio of rock stars from Oakland could be good for Broadway, it helps to appreciate what a filthy art form the theater is, and has always been. Exorbitant ticket prices -conceal-but can't -erase-the wonderfully vulgar DNA of every show that reaches these stages: they're descended from the satyr play, the leggy blonde kick line, the seedy vaudeville routine. Theater is a magpie art that needs to refresh itself constantly with the energy that's sloshing around society. Tiffany bangles it doesn't, you end up with the Broadway musical of the last few decades: an era in which Sondheim couldn't write his darkly brilliant musicals fast enough to arrest Broadway's slide into a bloated, self-referential style that made the place verge on being a punchline.

Two recent shifts have allowed Broadway to catch up to the music of the last 50 years. The first is generational: the people putting on shows, and buying tickets to shows, have grown up with rock. (In fact, the most telling sign of a new audience's arrival wasn't a rock show per se: the fact that Avenue Q, a dirty puppet show that riffed on Sesame Street, could sustain a six-year Broadway run meant that something major had shifted.) The other reason that pop musicals are thriving is that gifted artists have worked out a production style that suits the new material-no small feat when you realize how Tiffany bracelets the phrase "the new Broadway musical from Green Day" would have sounded just a few years ago. Even now it's a little crazy.

The controversial BMW 7 series is getting a midlife face-lift. The infamous "Bangle Butt," a reference to BMW designer Chris Bangle and to the car's bulbous trunk lid, has been toned down, but the sedan's basic shape remains. Frank Schloeder, a BMW spokesman in Munich, Germany, says the changes were part of a standard midlife face-lift and did not reflect a response to criticisms of the styling. The face-lifted 7 series, which goes on sale in the United States in May, also gets a cheap silver cufflinks iDrive system with two new buttons that let users change from the radio to the CD player without having to use the iDrive knob.

Want to live graciously without spending a bundle? Check out "Under a Tenner," a new exhibit at London's Design Museum which showcases everyday, inexpensive objects that exemplify the best in design. Curator Sophie McKinlay asked a group of experts--including bad-boy Brazilian furniture designers the Campana Brothers, British product designer Ron Arad and hip Foreign Office Architects--to name their favorite cheap-chic products. The result is surely one of the most eclectic museum exhibits ever, including everything from havaianas flip-flops to bangle bracelets to portable toilets to Rolling Stones album covers. The primary aim was to determine the prevalence of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9), sleep disorders diagnosed by pediatric providers in a large, primary care network. Secondary aims were to examine demographic variables related to these diagnoses and to examine the frequency of prescriptions for medications potentially used to treat sleep disorders. Electronic medical records were reviewed for 154957 patients (0 - 18 years) seen for a tiffany earrings on sale visit in 2007. Information collected included ICD-9 sleep diagnoses, demographic variables, comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorders, provider type, and medications. Across all ages, 3.7% of youths had an ICD-9 diagnosis for a sleep disorder.

The most-common diagnoses were sleep disorder not otherwise specified, enuresis, and sleep-disordered breathing. Predictors of sleep disorders varied according to developmental age group and included growth parameters, comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or autism spectrum disorder, and provider type. Potential sleep-related medications were prescribed for 6.1% of the sample subjects. This study is one of the first to examine comprehensively ICD-9 sleep tiffany necklaces sale given by primary care providers in a large representative sample of children 0 to 18 years of age. The 3.7% of patients with ICD-9 sleep diagnoses is significantly lower than prevalence rates reported in epidemiological studies, which suggests that primary care providers may be underdiagnosing sleep disorders in children and adolescents. Because sleep disorders are treatable when recognized, the results from this study suggest a significant need for additional education and support for primary care providers in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric sleep disorders.

The goal was to compare the predictive values of the Prometheus Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Serology 7 (IBD7) panel (Prometheus Laboratories, San Diego, CA) with the predictive values of routine blood tests in a population of children referred for initial evaluation of suspected IBD. Medical records of pediatric patients referred for evaluation of IBD for whom IBD7 tiffany on sale was performed at Prometheus Laboratories between January 2006 and November 2008 were reviewed. Patients underwent diagnosis by pediatric gastroenterologists on the basis of clinical, radiologic, endoscopic, and pathologic evaluations. A total of 394 records were identified. We excluded 90 records on the basis of age of >21 years, previous diagnosis of IBD, or unclear diagnosis. The prevalence of IBD in this cohort was 38%. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and ...value for the serological panel were 67%, 76%, 63%, 79%, and 42%, respectively, compared with values for tiffany pendants on sale combination of 3 abnormal routine laboratory test results of 72%, 94%, 85%, 79%, and 47%. The antiflagellin antibody assay, the newest assay added to the panel, had sensitivity of 50% and specificity of 53%. The question under consideration

The question under consideration was does cardiorespiratory training improve aerobic fitness in children with cerebral palsy and is there any carryover into activity? The study design consisted of a systematic review of randomized trials using the Cochrane cheap silver pendants guidelines. Participants were children of school age with cerebral palsy. Intervention included cardiorespiratory training consisting of activities conducted for an extended period, which were progressed in terms of duration and/or intensity over time. Combination programs were included if cardiorespiratory training comprised at least half of the program. Outcomes had to include a measure of aerobic fitness, for example, peak oxygen uptake. In addition, measures of activity that reflect aerobic fitness, for example, 6-min Walk Test were also desirable.

Three studies were identified which randomized participants to cardiorespiratory training or no intervention in addition to usual physiotherapy. A meta-analysis was not performed because of lack of data. Therefore, the between-group differences are reported in terms of cheap silver rings benefit. Short-term cardiorespiratory training (i.e. 2-4 months) increased aerobic fitness by 18-22% and long-term training (i.e. 8-9 months) by 26-41% compared with no additional intervention. Short-term training (i.e. 2-4 months) increased activity by 0-13%, and long-term training (i.e. 8-9 months) by 2-9%. The conclusion is that there is limited evidence about the effect of cardiorespiratory training in children with cerebral palsy. The available evidence suggests that training may improve aerobic fitness, but that there is little carryover into activity.

A meta-analysis of the studies published between January 1996 and July 2007 was performed. Funnel plots were examined and the presence of small-study effects was tested. Intensive therapy tended to have a greater effect than nonintensive therapy (1.32; 95% confidence interval: 0.55-2.10). The effect of intensive treatment tended to be apparently stronger for children 2 years of age. Our meta-analysis shows that, in children with cerebral palsy, intensive conventional therapy may improve the functional motor outcome, but the effect size seems to be modest.

The last time she saw

The last time she saw her little girl, the child hadn't wanted her to leave. But she had to get that diploma, if she was to get them out of their mess and have a thanksgiving pendants at a better life. So he would babysit. It was just for a few hours. Who couldn't look after a three-year-old for a few hours?

Speechless, she sat there in a heap, unmoving on the coffeestained couch of the intensive care unit quiet room. Guilt percolated her every word. Through her tears, she recalled how, at the time of their first meeting, his bandana, torn jeans, curses and three-day stubble had led her daughter to enquire suspiciously whether he was a pirate Now, in silence, the bitter irony of her child's imagery was plain."Did she suffer?"What she wanted to hear was obvious. The answer I had was the opposite."No." I said, avoiding her eyes.The girl had arrived in the emergency department extensively bruised, apneic and posturing; her hair soaking wet. His only explanation: that he had found her like that when he went to give thanksgiving rings a kiss.What happened during her mother's two-hour absence? Conjecture.

But her injuries, like the map to a well-guarded secret, walked me through the violent ordeal that preceded her death. Had she wanted to watch Cinderella instead of hockey? Had she had an accident? A bedtime tantrum? Or had she simply been looking for the attention he wouldn't provide?The theories crowded my mind. The scenarios parade inside it like so many inexpensive bracelets movies; the very thought of her cries so unbearable, it banishes the associated sound.Of course she had suffered. Even her mother knew that. But why render something already so painful, excruciating?

For months, the girl haunted me daily. Her face, forever etched in my memory, surfaced at will. In my migraines, her anguish; in my insomnia, her terror; in my deepest fears my own daughter's pale, naked body on a cold steel table. For as it happened, I did watch Cinderella: her breath in tandem with my own; her warm hand nestled in mine; her forehead soft under my lips. The same age. The inexpensive cufflinks hair. The same eyes. A parallel unconsciously fashioned but evermore consciously suffered.
